ITG2 Arcade: Modify the Default Theme (Add Speed Mods!)  -Back-

Note that this tutorial is for those who want to modify the default ITG2 theme without deleting or changing any data on the machine itself. If you want to edit a theme that you added, just edit it directly. It makes for much easier organization. If you don't know what I am talking about, just ignore this paragraph.

In order to modify themes without editing any of the original data on ITG2 (only adding data), you will first need to alter the Static.ini slightly.

In the ITG2AC Hacking Guide, you should have made a Static.ini that looks like this:

Code:
[Options]
AdditionalFolders=/itgdata/custom/

Add the following lines:

Code:
[dance]
Theme=<yourthemehere>

In place of "<yourthemehere>", you can put whatever you want. However, I don't recommend using spaces in the title. I am going to use the name "mods". So, my Static.ini will look like this:

Code:
[Options]
AdditionalFolders=/itgdata/custom/

[dance]
Theme=mods

You can either create a whole new Static.ini on your computer to put on the machine, or you can edit the existing one by booting into SLAX, navigating to /mnt/hda3, and typing in "mcedit Static.ini" and pressing enter to access a text editor. Either will work perfectly fine for this tutorial.

In your custom folder that you will be zipping up (see ITG2AC Hacking Guide, you will need to create another folder called "Themes". Within that folder, create another folder with whatever name you chose above (so "mods" for me).

In mods, create a new plain text document that we will be titling "metrics.ini". In the metrics.ini, type in (or copy and paste) the following:

Code:
[Global]
FallbackTheme=arcade

[Preferences-arcade]
Theme=mods

You can now put whatever changes you want to make to the default ITG2 theme in the mods folder.

I am also going to demonstrate adding speed mods as a possible modification that can be made to a theme.

Say you want to add 3.5x and 4.5x to a machine. You, first, need to open up your newly made metrics.ini and put in the following:

Code:
[ScreenOptionsMaster]
Speed=11
SpeedDefault=mod,1x
Speed,1=mod,1x;name,1x
Speed,2=mod,1.5x;name,1.5x
Speed,3=mod,2x;name,2x
Speed,4=mod,2.5x;name,2.5x
Speed,5=mod,3x;name,3x
Speed,6=mod,3.5x;name,3.5x
Speed,7=mod,4x;name,4x
Speed,8=mod,4.5x;name,4.5x
Speed,9=mod,5x;name,5x
Speed,10=mod,6x;name,6x
Speed,11=mod,C450;name,C450

So, in the end, your metrics.ini looks like this:

Code:
[Global]
FallbackTheme=arcade

[Preferences-arcade]
Theme=mods

[ScreenOptionsMaster]
Speed=11
SpeedDefault=mod,1x
Speed,1=mod,1x;name,1x
Speed,2=mod,1.5x;name,1.5x
Speed,3=mod,2x;name,2x
Speed,4=mod,2.5x;name,2.5x
Speed,5=mod,3x;name,3x
Speed,6=mod,3.5x;name,3.5x
Speed,7=mod,4x;name,4x
Speed,8=mod,4.5x;name,4.5x
Speed,9=mod,5x;name,5x
Speed,10=mod,6x;name,6x
Speed,11=mod,C450;name,C450

For the sake of space, I have removed C300 from the mods list since I have never seen anyone use it.

Since you are adding text, you will have to create a language file as well.

In the "mods" folder, make a new folder called "Languages". Within that, make a plain text document called "english.ini".

Put this into the english.ini:

Code:
[OptionNames]
1x=1
1.5x=1.5
2x=2
2.5x=2.5
3x=3
3.5x=3.5
4x=4
4.5x=4.5
5x=5
6x=6
C450=c450

For the sake of space, I have removed all the "x" letters from the names. This allows all of the speed mods to fit on one line in the menu. If you decide to use more than 11 speed mods, this won't help you, and so you may as well just leave the "x" letters in. There is no limit to the number of speed mods that you can have at once, but there is a limit for how many will show up on the line at once. Also, remember that 40 speed mods might be tedious for other (less experienced) players.

At this point, save all files if you haven't already, test them out on OpenITG, and then zip the custom folder and unzip onto the arcade machine if everything works how you want it to.

Modifying the ITG2 theme to have new speed mods is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many things that can be done to the theme depending on how creative you get and how much you can figure out by screwing around with different metrics and files. Things like sound replacement, graphic replacement, many mod combinations, and a better operator's menu are just some of the things that can easily be done through theme modification if you know your way around StepMania.
